Preview of x8y12pxDenkiChip, a free bold pixel style Japanese font

x8y12pxDenkiChip (でんきチップ) is a compact and bold Japanese pixel font by hicchicc. Designed around a 2px thick stroke as its base unit, x8y12pxDenkiChip or DenkiChip in short was crafted with a strong focus on compactness and visual impact. The name translates loosely to “electric chip,” and the font lives up to that energy: tightly packed, condensed bold letterforms that give off a sense of charged, dense power. This is a pixel font that does not whisper; it announces itself.

The vertical metrics are designed to fill a 12px cap height almost entirely, making it one of the most space-efficient fonts of its kind. On Windows environments, setting the font size to 9pt or 12px may enable dot-by-dot rendering, and embedded bitmaps will display at native resolution when supported. The horizontal metrics are structured with variable advance widths: proportional Latin letters, 6px for numerals, 8px for hiragana and katakana, and 10px for kanji. This is an unusually compact and “challenging” horizontal configuration, as the creator describes it, but one that lends the font a dense, grid-like energy perfectly suited to game UIs, retro-style interfaces, and pixel art projects. In terms of kanji coverage, DenkiChip currently implements education kanji from the first through fourth grades (Jōyō kanji grades 1 to 4), with plans to extend coverage through sixth grade in future updates. It’s free to download and be used commercial projects, as it’s licensed under SIL Open Font License.
