Shinbashi Gothic

Preview of Shinbashi Gothic, a bold gothic free Japanese font

Shinbashi Gothic (しんばしごちっく) is a free Japanese rounded gothic font created by Typingart & Co. It was created based on Source Han Sans (源ノ角ゴシック) with a meaningful modification: the corners of the kanji characters have been rounded off, giving the typeface a softer, more approachable feel while preserving Source Han Sans’s solid structural foundation. Then the hiragana, katakana, alphanumerics, and select symbols are entirely custom glyphs drawn by Typingart & Co. themselves.

The result is a gothic typeface that feels simultaneously grounded and friendly. Source Han Sans is known for being clean, neutral, and highly legible — reliable in the best sense of the word. Shinbashi Gothic keeps all of that and adds a warmth that the original doesn’t have. The rounded corners on the kanji subtly loosen the overall texture of text set in this font, making it feel less institutional and more inviting. Shinbashi Gothic supports up to JIS Level 1 and 2 characters — solid coverage for most everyday Japanese text needs. The font is released under SIL Open Font License 1.1, therefore you can use this on commercial projects.
