Gen Interface JP

Preview of Gen Interface JP, a free san s-serif Japanese font

Gen Interface JP is a typeface designed for digital interfaces, built around the idea of harmonizing Latin script with Japanese. It was created by blending two of the world’s most widely used open-source fonts: Inter for Latin characters and Noto Sans JP for Japanese. This wasn’t simply a matter of merging two fonts together. The Japanese characters were carefully adjusted in size, position, and letter spacing to achieve a seamless blend between the two typefaces, resulting in Latin and Japanese characters that sit side by side as though they belong to the same family.

While Gen Interface JP was primarily designed as a digital typeface for web and app user interfaces, it is equally suited for print, banners, and documents. The family includes eight weights ranging from Thin to ExtraBold, and comes in two versions: the standard version for body text and UI use, and a Display version with tighter letter spacing optimized for large headings and prominent displays. Gen Interface JP is free to download and available for commercial use, released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
