Hakkou Mincho

Preview of Hakkou Mincho, a sparkly mincho style free Japanese font

Hakkou Mincho (白光明朝) is a free mincho (serif) Japanese font derived from Noto Serif. Designed by designer named “lavsic”, The font takes the classic proportions of a traditional mincho and pushes them in an elegant new direction: horizontal strokes are thinned out and the overall form is stretched vertically, giving the characters a tall, graceful silhouette. Slit-like cutouts are introduced at certain points along the strokes, adding a lightness and airiness that makes the overall design feel almost ethereal.

What truly sets Hakkou Mincho apart is its defining decorative touch: star motifs are scattered throughout the character set, appearing on select glyphs at random to evoke a sparkling, fantastical atmosphere. It is a subtle flourish, but one that gives the font a distinctive personality suited to creative and imaginative projects. You can download this font for free and be used on commercial projects, and it was released under SIL Open Font License.
