Enka Dot Gothic 24

Preview of Enka Dot Gothic 24, a pixel style free Japanese font

Enka Dot Gothic 24 (縁架ドットゴシック24) is a free 24-dot pixel gothic font hand-crafted by Enthiesia (エンゼシア), a Japanese independent font designer. The glyphs are based on the letterforms of Noto Sans, then painstakingly recreated pixel by pixel at a 24-dot resolution to produce an authentic bitmap aesthetic. With its clean, gothic (sans-serif) character, the font is perfect for recreating the kind of digital signage and electronic display text you might see in everyday Japanese life — think train carriage notices, vending machine screens, or retro game interfaces — or simply for adding a cool, digital mood to your designs. Note that vertical writing is not supported.

Enka Dot Gothic 24 comes with the common Japanese characters, including full kyōiku kanji characters support, totaling about 1,082 kanji characters as of time of writing. Not fantastic in terms of kanji character support, but it should cover most basic uses. It is free to download and be used on commercial projects, as it was released under SIL Open Font License.
